CHAPTER XXI: “Got My Back?”

As Nadet’ and his friends rode the bus home from Sound Garden, they kept talking about being the Baltimore Boyz. Nadet’ wasn’t paying them any attention because he received a text from Sister Diane that said good job. He felt good about it because he knew she was speaking for his mom

“Space cadet!”

“Stop calling me that. I can hear you Dee. I just don’t care about what you’re saying.”

“Man, we need a street legal name for you or that’s what it’s gonna be… Gunz, Wizdom, and Space Cadet! The Baltimore Boyz gonna be the shit.”

“Doing what… hustlin? Call me Space Cadet one more time and I’m fuckin’ you up. I told you already, I’m not getting in the drug game so I guess I’m not a Baltimore Boy!”

“What the fuck ever man… The Baltimore Boyz are more than hustlin, it’s a lifestyle. Loyalty, no snitchin’, respect for the code, and everything in between but you already know that shit Day-Day,” shouted Dee as he responded.

Everyone on the bus looked at them as they got into each other’s face. Nadet’ put his hand across Dee’s face and pushed it. Ralph jumped between them before he could respond.

“Come on man. Stop this dumb shit! Ya’ll like brothers, fuck that…ya’ll are brothers.”

“Naw, Nadet’ thinks he’s better than me. That’s why you laughed at my ideas and don’t want to be a part of The Baltimore Boys, right?!”

Nadet’ didn’t say anything. He had so much on his mind and his friends didn’t seem to understand. Dee’s stop was next; he lived a few blocks away from Ralph and Nadet’ on Broadway.

“Aight then, this is my stop. I’m gonna check you tomorrow Ralph,” said Dee as he looked Nadet’ in the eyes. “You don’t have to worry ‘bout me anymore.”

Dee got off the bus and Ralph looked at Nadet’. He shook his head and smirked because he understood both of them.

“Yo Day-Day, Dee only wants to be a part of something special. That’s why he wants you in it so badly. It hurts him when you reject it.”

“Man, I ain’t got time to babysit Dee. I got problems of my own.”

“That’s some cold shit right there,” said Ralph.

“Why are you always defending him?”

“I do the same for you because I understand what makes you tick. As far as I can see, he’s not mad… he’s hurt because you don’t want to be down with him. You gotta know who’s on your side Day-Day.”

“This is our stop,” responded Nadet’.

As they got off of the bus they slapped five and went their separate ways. Ralph decided to call Dee to see if he was cool as Nadet’ headed home.

Meanwhile… after getting off the bus Dee decided stop pass the corner Caribbean spot. He was still upset about arguing with Nadet’.

“Yo Trevor, gimmie two beef patties!”

“You mean Bitch Patties right?” A voice called out from behind Dee.

“What? Nah, ain’t no bitches over here homeboy…” responded Dee as he turned to see who was attempting to call him out.
